Provision Overview

Our aim is for all children in Portland Primary School to enjoy 2 hours of quality PE per week through curriculum lesons and other activities during and after the school day.

We have again provided children in school with a school PE kit as required enabling them to be properly prepared for PE.

The teacher led football club on Monday evenings after school continued from the autumn term to the summer term 2016-2017, and football at dinnertime has continued on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for those who wish to participate. We also run a KS1 girl’s football at dinnertime on Thursday. Football is very popular at Portland and we try to have as many competitions, both intra and inter competitions as we can. During the winter months an indoor badminton club ran and was very successful, particularly as it allowed pupils to play both against and with members of staff.

Year 6 has again been lucky enough to attend the popular journalistic programme run by Tranmere Rovers and linked to football. They took part in workshops based around journalistic writing and then were invited to watch a football match and provide a report about it. Tranmere Rovers in the Community have also provided a series of Street Dance workshops in curriculum time for pupils in Year 5 and 6 and we hope to extend this offer throughout Key Stage 2 this year.

Year 6 residential visit to our local outdoor activities centre, Barnstondale was another huge success with all children participating in activities such as archery, climbing and problem solving, allowing children to experience a completely different and enriching environment.

We have continued to build on the good links we have established with two local schools and are looking to extend this to include all schools in our cluster group. We are assisted in this by Birkenhead Park School as part of their cluster primary schools link and try to attend a large variety of events organised by them. They also deliver curriculum P.E. sessions with Year 1 and Year 2 every week.

This year we have been very fortunate to have had coaching from Birkenhead Rugby Club and all of KS2 has benefitted from their expertise. These sessions have proved very popular with the children and we have taken part in Inter competitions hosted by the club. We are looking to continue and build on the success of this initiative and we are hoping that some of our children identified as talented by the coaches, will join the rugby club this year.

Our extra curricular Karate club (Paul Nolan) is open to all children wishing to participate in both KS1 and KS2 and we now have 2 coaches present during each session. The more established members of the club have taken part in nationally recognised grading schemes and this is something we want to encourage and continue to accelerate in the academic year 2016-2017. Again, we have also partly funded the children in the provision of karate clothing and equipment.

The EYFS/KS1 gymnastics (Sue Flannagan) continues to be very popular and I am pleased to report that the club proposed last year has now been set up for those children identified as being gifted or talented. This runs for 1 hour after school and includes EYFS and Y1 children. For the academic year 2016 -2017 it will extend to include children from Y2 as the current children move through the school. We are hoping this process will continue to evolve as the children move further through the school. As reported last year we have been successful in entering all children in this club for at least one nationally recognised award, with some children gaining multiple progression badges. We now have established club links and at least four of our children attend the affiliated gym club as of July 2016. One of our TA’s in EYFS is attending the gym club as a volunteer coach and I am very pleased to report that she has now completed Grade 1 of her nationally recognised coaching certificate. We will continue to fund her as she progresses with her coaching qualifications with a view to her running her own after school club when she is fully qualified. Because of our expanding Outreach and club links we have developed links with local clubs and some of our children now attend local gymnastic, football and karate clubs.

PE Premium Funding 2015-2016

During this academic year we have continued to provide at least two hours of physical education per week. We endeavour to provide a broad and balanced PE curriculum and have continued to work with our Outreach provider to access activities such as Tag Rugby and Tri Golf as well as cluster sports competitions.

We have used the extra PE Premium Funding to improve provision of PE and sport during the academic year 2015-2016 as follows:

Enriched Curriculum and increased participation to raise self-esteem and allow pupils to develop healthy lifestyles.

  • We continue to provide PE kits to children to ensure each child is properly dressed for PE.
  •  Barnstondale Year 6 Residential Trip.
  • Tranmere Rovers journalistic Project (Yr 6).
  • Karate Club
  • EYFS Gymnastics, including a Gifted and Talented club
  • Football Club (3 x 30 mins lunchtimes and after school on Monday).
  • Rounders Club (Summer Term).
  • Jamie Carragher Football Club (Until Christmas 2015).

In October 2015 we again had the current Y6 residential trip to Barnstondale which was very successful and enriching for the pupils.

The EYFS gymnastics  now runs across a morning as it is so popular and the children have made rapid progress. It also allows for differentiation of EYFS children so all children can access the lesson and work at a level appropriate to their ability. In Autumn 2015 we began our Gifted and Talented club for children in F2 and Y1. This runs at dinnertime and the coach is assisted by one of our TA's, Miss C Smith, who has now  completed the first part of her coaching qualification, and now volunteers at the gym club. Five children now attend Bebington Gymnastics Club with two of our children taking part in the Wirral Sets competition representing the club. We anticipate that more children will join this coming academic year. All of the children attending the Portland club have taken at least one nationally recognised proficiency badge with some progressing further.

From Autumn 2015 this club increased to F2, Y1 and Y2 and ran as both a dinnertime and after school club. From September 2016 this will be an after school club as we feel the children get more out of the longer session.

Karate club  continues to be very popular and now covers both KS1 and KS2. All of the established club members have now taken at least one grading and we are continuing to push for regular grading to progress the children further. We have been unable to enter competitions this year but as the popularity of this sport grows in the area we will continue to look at possibilities of extending the children's skills by hosting competitions or showcases in the coming academic year 2016-2017.

We ran the Jamie Carragher Football School until the end of the autumn term 2015 and children were awarded certificates for participation in this activity.

There are currently 184 children on roll at Portland Primary School not including F1. Of these children 102 (55%) children have participated in one or more after school sports activity .

Other News

  • With the support of our Outreach partners at Birkenhead High School the children have had sessions in Tri Golf and Y3 and Y4 children took part in a Tri Golf competition at the Birkenhead High School.
  • Tag Rugby -We have also been very fortunate to make links with our local rugby club who have been providing training for our KS2 children during the Spring and Summer terms. The children have taken part in events held at the rugby club and we are hoping that the children identified by the coaches as having good skills will join the club in the hear future. The coaches have agreed to continue the sessions provided at Portland for the academic year 2016-2017.
  • We also had a Dance club that ran during the autumn term 2015. This was set up after requests from pupils through our School and Sports Council. This was run by Miss Whalley, an excellent dance teacher, who is also one of our TA's. Miss Whalley is currently on maternity leave and we wish her and her new son Jack well.
  • From autumn term 2015 we used the new Wirral Scheme of Work to enhance our delivery of Physical Education. At the time of writing the PE coordinator is collating the assessments from this scheme but it has proved popular with both the teachers and the children.
  • We obtained the Sainsbury School Games Silver Award this year for our PE delivery and all staff and children must be congratulated on their efforts in gaining this award.
  • The application for 2015-2016 is a little more complicated due to our SSG coordinator taking maternity leave and the entry criteria being changed so we may not be eligible to apply for the academic year 2015-2016 but we will follow this up for the academic tear 2016-2017.

PE Premium Funding 2014-2015

During this academic year we have continued to provide at least two hours of physical education per week. We endeavour to provide a broad and balanced PE curriculum and have continued to work with our Outreach provider to access activities such as Trampolining, Tag Rugby and Netball as well as cluster sports competitions.

We have used the extra PE Premium Funding to improve provision of PE and sport during the academic year 2014-2015 as follows:

Enriched Curriculum and increased participation to raise self-esteem and allow pupils to develop healthy lifestyles.

  • School PE kit for every child to ensure each child is properly dressed for PE.
  •  Barnstondale Year 6 Residential Trip.
  • Tranmere Rovers journalistic Project (Yr 6).
  • Karate Club
  • Trampolining (Yr 6)
  • EYFS Gymnastics, including a Gifted and Talented club
  • Football Club (3 x 30 mins lunchtimes and after school on Monday).
  • Rounders Club (Summer Term).
  • Jamie Carragher Football Club (friday afternoon).
  • Extra swimming for Y6 to enable children to obtain national standard for 11 year olds.

In October 2014 we again had the current Y6 residential trip to Barnstondale which was very successful and enriching for the pupils.

The EYFS gymnastics  now runs across a morning as it is so popular and the children have made rapid progress. It also allows for differentiation of EYFS children so all children can access the lesson and work at a level appropriate to their ability. In Autumn 2014 we began our Gifted and Talented club for children in F2 and Y1. This runs at dinnertime and the coach is assisted by one of our TA's, Miss C Smith, who is now completing recognised coaching qualification, and volunteers at the gym club. Two of the children in our club have now joined the affiliated gymnastic club and all of the children have taken at least one nationally recognised proficiency badge with some progressing further. Two of the children have recently taken part in a competition and did very well finishing 3rd in their classes.

From Autumn 2015 this club will increase to F2, Y1 and Y2 and at present we are deciding whether to keep it as a dinnertime club or to split it into a dinnertime and after school club. We will finalise the arrangements as soon as possible in September.

Karate club has become increasingly popular and was offered to all of KS2 in the Autumn term 2014. This was further increased to include KS1 in summer term 2015. We have purchased new flooring and equipment for this club and in June 2015 we hosted a showcase for other schools in the area to show how the club has increased the skills, ability and self-esteem of the children. This was organised by Miss Randles who oversees this club. All of the established club members have now taken at least one grading and we are continuing to push for regular grading to progress the children further. We will also be trying to enter into some inter school/club competitions in the academic year 2015-2016.

In the 2013-2014 academic year we identified that not enough children were leaving Portland able to swim the required 25m. We therefore purchased extra swimming time for this year group after SAT's 2015 to allow pupils to obtain the standard. This proved to be very successful with 19 out of 24 pupils obtaining the standard of 25m (79%) when none of the previous cohort reached the standard. We will continue to monitor this closely in the academic year 2015-2016 for this Year 6.

We are also currently having a football coach for those children in KS2 who wish to participate. This is through Jamie Carragher Football Schools and it increases the skills and teamwork of our pupils. This takes place on Friday afternoons.

There are currently 140 children on roll at Portland Primary School not including F1. Of these children 84 (60%) children have participated in one or more after school sports activity . Of these children, 48 (34%) have at some point been on the SEN register or have accessed some form of intervention activity during their time in school.

Continued Professional Development 2014 -2015

  •  PE Co-ordinator and TA attended a Twilight session re the new Wirral Scheme of Work in PE (Autumn Term).
  • TA in EYFS attending coaching sessions to obtain national qualifications in gymnastic coaching (ongoing).
  • TA attended a two day training course in swimming coaching (Spring Term).

PE Premium Funding 2013 – 2014

At Portland Primary School all children receive approximately two hours of physical education per week. Lessons are skills based and are planned thoroughly to ensure that all children acquire a wide range of skills.Through our Outreach provider we have been able to access specialist, skilled coaches  who provide lessons such as Trampolining, Dance, Tag Rugby and Street Dance to enhance the curriculum further.

In April 2013 the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education (PE) and sport. Each primary school recieves approximately £9,000 annually dependent on numbers on roll. At present the Government has committed to this funding for 2 years but may decide to continue it after the two year cycle.

This funding is used in Portland to improve provision of PE and sport as follows:

Enriched Curriculum and increased participation to raise self-esteem and allow pupils to develop healthy lifestyles.

  •  Barnstondale Year 6 Residential Trip.
  • Barnstondale Team Building Day (Yr 4) - part funded by Swallows and Amazons Adventure Group.
  • Tranmere Rovers Journalistic Project (Yr 6).
  • After School Netball Club (Autumn).
  • Karate Club
  • Trampolining (Yr 2)
  • EYFS Gymnastics
  • Football Club (3 x 30 mins lunchtimes and after school onMonday).
  • Rounders Club (Summer Term)

In October 2014 we again had the current Y6 residential trip to Barnstondale which was very successful and enriching for the pupils.

The EYFS gymnastics was initially 1 hour in autumn but was increased to 2 hours for spring and summer as it is so popular and the children have made rapid progress. It also allows for differentiation of EYFS children so all children can access the lesson and work at a level appropriate to their ability.

In Autumn 2014 we are going to start a gymnastics dinnertime club for our gifted and talented gymnasts. This will initially be made up from upils in Y1 and EYFS but we are hoping to expand this year on year to really stretch our gifted and talented gymnasts.

We have already begun work towards recognised grading in gymnastics and hope that all of the children will have completed one grading badge by the end of the year.

Karate club – (Yr5/6) spring and summer term - After School and Year 1 in curriculum time (1 hour per week spring and summer term.). We are hoping to continue this club indefinitely after school and would anticipate that some, if not all of the children will take part in grading tests in the future.

The karate club has continued after school in Autumn 2014 and some of the children have achieved their first grading. We also opened the club to Y4 children. It continues to be very popular.

There are currently 157 children on roll at Portland Primary School not including F1. Of these children 73 (46%) children have participated in one or more after school sports activity . Of these children, 35 (48%) have at some point been on the SEN register or have accessed some form of intervention activity during their time in school.

We anticipate that the  number of children accessing after school clubs will rise as EYFS have access to the gymnastics club in the autumn term 2014.
